This modern farmhouse renovation began with a simple goal: keep the rural charm, but make it functional for a young family. The original layout was cramped and dark, with small rooms that didn't connect to the surrounding landscape. We opened up the main living area, added large steel-framed windows facing the fields, and kept the exterior classic with white siding and a standing-seam metal roof. Inside, we balanced reclaimed wood beams with sleek built-in storage. The result is a home that feels both timeless and completely current.

Solving Hidden Problems
Not everything showed up in the initial walkthrough. Once we removed the old drywall, we discovered uneven floor joists, outdated knob-and-tube wiring, and almost no insulation in the exterior walls. Fixing these issues added two weeks to the schedule, but we refused to cover them up just to save time. We leveled the floors, rewired the entire ground floor, and installed closed-cell spray foam throughout. The client now has a home that is not only beautiful but also safe, quiet, and energy-efficient—things you can't see in a photo but feel every single day.
The kitchen became the heart of the project. The original design called for a standard layout, but after watching how the family actually moved through their space, we proposed a full reorganization. We moved the sink under a new window, extended the island by three feet, and added a walk-in pantry where a useless hallway used to be. The client initially hesitated about the extra cost, but after living with it for a month, they called it the best decision of the entire renovation. Sometimes the right move is the one they didn't know they needed.

From dark and divided to open and breathing
The transformation is most visible in two places: light and flow. Before, the living room had one small window facing north. After, it has three large windows facing south and west, flooding the space with natural light from morning to late afternoon. Before, you had to walk through the kitchen to get from the entry to the backyard. After, a new mudroom with a direct exterior door changed how the family enters and leaves every day. These are not cosmetic upgrades. They are structural shifts in how a home works. And that is what makes this farmhouse modern—not the finishes, but the thinking behind them.
Materials & Craft
Every surface chosen for how it lives and ages
We avoid materials that look good only on day one. For this farmhouse, that meant specifying a soapstone countertop that hides scratches, wide-plank white oak floors that can be sanded and refinished years later, and unlacquered brass fixtures that develop a natural patina over time. The exterior uses cedar shingles left untreated—they will weather to a soft silver-gray instead of peeling or fading. Every decision was made with the understanding that real life happens here. Kids will drop things. Dogs will run through. And none of it will ruin what we built. That's the difference between designing for a photoshoot and designing for a family.
