We Built Together

Our team partnered with a local nonprofit to renovate a community garden shed and outdoor gathering space in the Southside neighborhood over one weekend.

The project involved replacing a rotting shed roof, building two raised planter beds, installing a gravel path, and painting a faded mural on the existing fence. We supplied all materials and tools. The nonprofit provided lunch both days and recruited five volunteers from the neighborhood to work alongside our crew. Rain threatened both mornings but never arrived.

We chose this particular site because the garden had been serving the neighborhood for over a decade but had never received any major maintenance. The shed had active leaks damaging stored tools and seeds. The path was mud whenever it rained. Several elderly residents had stopped visiting because the uneven ground became hard to walk on. We wanted to fix that.

Eight of our team members volunteered their Saturday and Sunday, including two carpenters, a painter, and our lead designer who helped replan the garden layout for better accessibility. We finished the new gravel path wide enough for a wheelchair or a stroller. The planter boxes are now at two heights—lower for seated gardening and higher for standing work. The shed roof now has new shingles and a working gutter that drains into a rain barrel. The mural was repainted by a local artist who donated her time after hearing about the project from a neighbor.

The garden coordinator sent us photos the following week showing kids planting vegetables in the new beds and an elderly couple sitting on a bench we did not even install—they brought their own because they finally had a dry, level place to put it. That image mattered more than any portfolio photo. We plan to do one community build each year, rotating among different neighborhoods. No press releases. No branding on the structures. Just good work for places that need it. This is what we mean when we say we build more than houses.
